Gorkha National Women’s Organisation Forms Lingiya Branch in Tamsang Area

Darjeeling, February 7: A new local unit of the Gorkha National Women’s Organisation has been constituted in Lingiya under the Chungthung–Meribung–Tamsang constituency, with community leaders stating that the platform aims to increase women’s participation in social and political processes in the hills.

The branch was formed during an organisational meeting attended by party functionaries and constituency representatives. Participants said the move is part of efforts to strengthen grassroots structures and encourage women to take on greater responsibilities within community-based initiatives.

Menuka Subba was unanimously chosen to head the Lingiya branch as president. Other office-bearers and executive members were also selected during the meeting, which organisers described as focused on building a structured and active local women’s forum.

Focus on Organisational Strength and Women’s Role

Speakers at the meeting underlined the importance of a dedicated women’s wing in mobilising community support and addressing local concerns. According to leaders present, women have historically played a significant role in social movements and public life in the hills, and their organised involvement is viewed as essential for strengthening outreach at the village and constituency levels.

They said the new branch would work to raise awareness among women about social issues, community development, and civic responsibilities, while also supporting the broader organisational goals of the parent body.

One of the senior leaders present said that building strong local committees ensures that voices from the grassroots are better represented. She added that structured participation of women can help create a more inclusive environment in community decision-making.

Political Context and Statements by Leaders

During the meeting, leaders reiterated the party’s long-standing position on issues related to the rights and identity of the Gorkha community. They stated that organisational work at the local level would continue alongside efforts to seek solutions to political demands through constitutional means.

A senior functionary said that party leadership has already undertaken the necessary responsibilities in engaging with national authorities and that supporters should remain patient while continuing organisational work. She urged members not to be diverted by unrelated issues and to stay focused on their stated objectives.

Other constituency leaders present congratulated the newly elected members and encouraged them to work in a disciplined and coordinated manner. They emphasised unity and collective effort in carrying forward social and community-oriented activities.

The meeting concluded with the announcement of the new office-bearers for the Lingiya branch of the women’s organisation.

  • President: Menuka Subba

  • Secretary: Sinora Khawas
  • Joint Secretary: Tara Rai

In addition, Ajila Dewan, Shweta Dewan and Bindiya Tamang were selected as executive members.

Community leaders felicitated the newly appointed representatives with traditional ceremonial scarves as a gesture of goodwill and encouragement.

Role of Women’s Wings in Hill Politics

Women’s organisations have long been part of political and social mobilisation in the Darjeeling hills. Beyond electoral politics, such groups often engage in awareness campaigns, social welfare activities, and community coordination at the local level.

Observers note that women’s wings within political formations frequently serve as a bridge between party structures and households, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. They can also provide platforms for leadership development among women and create channels for addressing issues such as education, health, and social welfare.

Looking Ahead

Leaders associated with the new Lingiya branch said their immediate focus would be on strengthening membership, holding regular meetings, and engaging with women in the area on local concerns. They expressed hope that the platform would encourage more women to participate in community affairs and contribute to discussions on development and social issues.

The formation of the branch reflects ongoing efforts by organisations in the hills to expand their grassroots presence. Whether such initiatives translate into broader social or political impact will depend on sustained engagement and coordination in the months ahead.
