Ola Electric Secures BIS Approval for Residential Battery System, Set to Begin Deliveries in January 2026

Ola Electric has taken a significant step beyond electric vehicles by receiving regulatory clearance to commercially roll out its residential battery energy storage system in India. The approval positions the Bengaluru-based company to enter the rapidly evolving clean energy and power backup market, at a time when households and small businesses are increasingly seeking reliable alternatives to conventional inverters and diesel generators.

The company has secured certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for its Ola Shakti residential Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the 6kW/9.1kWh configuration. With this milestone achieved, Ola Electric has announced that deliveries of the certified variant will begin by the end of January 2026.


Regulatory Approval Marks Key Expansion Beyond EVs

BIS certification is mandatory for electrical and energy storage products intended for residential use in India. For Ola Electric, the clearance represents more than just regulatory compliance—it signals the company’s formal entry into the home energy storage segment.

According to the company, the Ola Shakti system is fully designed, engineered, and manufactured in India, and is powered by its indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cells. This aligns with the broader national focus on domestic manufacturing and reduced dependence on imported energy technologies.

Market reaction to the announcement was mixed, with Ola Electric Mobility Ltd shares trading lower during the day. Analysts, however, note that short-term stock movements may not reflect the long-term potential of the residential energy storage market, which is expected to grow as power demand rises and grid reliability varies across regions.


Safety Testing and Standards Compliance

As part of the certification process, the Ola Shakti system underwent extensive testing under Indian and international safety standards applicable to residential power systems. These tests are designed to ensure that battery storage systems can operate safely in homes, farms, and small commercial setups.

The evaluations covered electrical safety measures such as short-circuit and overload protection, along with fire and thermal hazard safeguards. The system was also assessed for protection against electric shock, mechanical risks, and acoustic or sonic pressure hazards.

Environmental testing formed a critical part of the process, given India’s diverse climate conditions. The battery pack carries an IP67 rating, indicating a high level of protection against dust and water ingress. Ola Electric said the system has been tested to withstand monsoon conditions and voltage fluctuations common in many parts of the country.


Product Features and Technical Capabilities

The Ola Shakti residential BESS is positioned as a modern alternative to traditional lead-acid inverter systems. One of its key features is an instant, zero-millisecond changeover during power outages, which helps prevent disruptions to sensitive electronic appliances.

The system operates within a wide input voltage range of 170V to 270V, designed to shield household equipment from sudden voltage spikes or drops. The battery is spill-proof and requires no routine maintenance, addressing common concerns associated with conventional inverter batteries.

According to the company, the 9.1kWh variant can provide up to 1.5 hours of backup at full load, with the ability to support high-load appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, induction cooktops, water pumps, and communication equipment. Fast charging capability is also highlighted as a practical advantage for users facing frequent or prolonged power cuts.


Pricing, Variants, and Delivery Timeline

The Ola Shakti range is being offered in two configurations aimed at different usage needs. The entry-level 3kW/5.2kWh version is priced at ₹1,49,999, while the higher-capacity 6kW/9.1kWh variant carries a price tag of ₹2,49,999.

With BIS approval now in place, Ola Electric has confirmed that deliveries of the 9.1kWh system will commence by the end of January 2026. The 5.2kWh variant is expected to begin shipping from mid-February 2026.

Both versions are currently listed on the company’s official website and are available through its nationwide network of retail stores, giving customers the option to explore the product in person before purchase.


Strategic Push Into Decentralised Energy

Company representatives have described the residential battery system as part of a broader vision to reshape how energy is stored and consumed in India. By targeting homes, farms, and small businesses, Ola Electric aims to address gaps in grid reliability while supporting the transition toward cleaner and more decentralised power solutions.

Industry observers point out that residential energy storage could play a growing role as rooftop solar adoption increases, even though Ola has not positioned the product exclusively as a solar-linked solution. The system’s design allows it to function as a standalone backup, making it relevant even for consumers without solar installations.

With regulatory clearance secured and deliveries scheduled to begin soon, Ola Electric’s entry into residential energy storage marks an important diversification of its business. The success of the Ola Shakti system will likely depend on real-world performance, after-sales support, and how effectively the company can differentiate itself in a market that is drawing increasing competition.

As India’s energy needs evolve and consumers seek cleaner, smarter backup solutions, Ola Electric’s move signals a broader shift toward integrated energy ecosystems that extend well beyond electric mobility.
