11 Personalities from West Bengal Named for Padma Shri Awards Ahead of Republic Day

Eleven individuals from West Bengal have been selected for the Padma Shri this year, marking national recognition for contributions spanning cinema, classical music, literature, education, medicine, theatre, and traditional crafts. The honours were announced on the eve of Republic Day as part of India’s civilian awards list, which celebrates distinguished service across diverse fields.

The inclusion of awardees from both urban cultural centres and rural craft traditions highlights the state’s long-standing influence in the arts, academics, and social development. Notably, several recipients represent North Bengal, underlining the region’s growing visibility in national forums.

Cinema and Performing Arts Take Centre Stage

Veteran actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, a leading figure in Bengali cinema, is among the most high-profile names on the list. With a career spanning more than five decades and over 350 films, Chatterjee has remained a consistent presence in regional entertainment, working across cinema and television. Industry observers view the recognition as acknowledgment of his enduring impact on Bengali popular culture.

Theatre has also been honoured posthumously with the Padma Shri for Harimadhab Mukhopadhyay, a director known for taking stage productions beyond metropolitan spaces into rural Bengal. Over a career of six decades, he directed dozens of plays and contributed as a writer and actor. His family described the recognition as a moment of pride, saying it affirms his lifelong dedication to theatre.

Recognition for Classical Music Traditions

Indian classical music features prominently among the awardees. Tarun Bhattacharya, a noted santoor player, has been recognised for his role in expanding the instrument’s reach and refining its technical aspects.

Tabla maestro Kumar Bose, associated with the Banaras gharana, also joins the list. Based in Kolkata, Bose has performed widely and previously received national recognition in the field of performing arts. His work has helped sustain classical percussion traditions while mentoring younger musicians.

Literature and Education: Stories of Social Change

The Padma Shri list includes individuals whose work bridges education and social empowerment. Ashok Kumar Haldar, who began his professional life in railway service, later emerged as a prominent writer and educationist. His journey from modest beginnings to literary recognition is often cited as an example of perseverance and social mobility through education.

Gambhir Singh Yonzone from the Darjeeling Hills has been acknowledged for contributions to education, literature, and social service, along with work connected to environmental awareness in hill regions.

Academic leadership is represented by Mahendra Nath Roy, an educationist and chemistry scholar associated with higher education development in North Bengal. His work in research and university administration has contributed to academic growth in the region.

Traditional Crafts and Women’s Livelihoods

Traditional textile and embroidery practices also received national attention. Tripti Mukherjee, known for her work in Kantha embroidery, has helped thousands of women gain skills and income through training initiatives. Her efforts are seen as strengthening both heritage crafts and rural livelihoods.

Jyotish Debnath, a Jamdani weaver from Purba Burdwan, has been honoured for preserving intricate handloom traditions and training a large number of artisans over the years. Such recognitions highlight the government’s emphasis on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.

Contribution to Healthcare and Indigenous Literature

In medicine, Dr. Saroj Mandal, an experienced cardiologist, has been recognised for his contribution to cardiac care. His inclusion reflects the role of medical professionals working in specialised treatment and patient care.

The literary field also features Rabilal Tudu, a writer in the Santali language, whose work has contributed to the visibility of indigenous literature. His recognition points to the importance of regional and tribal languages within the national literary landscape.

National Context of the Padma Awards

The Padma Awards are among India’s highest civilian honours, conferred annually in categories including Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The awards are formally presented by the President of India at ceremonies held at Rashtrapati Bhavan later in the year.

While West Bengal’s representation this year is limited to the Padma Shri category, the diversity of fields covered underscores the breadth of contribution emerging from the state.

Looking Ahead

The recognition of artists, educators, doctors, and craft practitioners from varied backgrounds signals continued national attention to grassroots cultural and intellectual work. For West Bengal, the awards serve as both celebration and reminder of the need to sustain artistic traditions, educational initiatives, and community-based livelihoods in the years to come.
